The highway from Amsterdam to Rome is leading right through Maastricht. Until now.
A two storey tunnel is currently built under the whole city. The highway has divided the city in two parts for decades, now this wound can be healed. There is a beautiful plan of a green zone following the highway track. Not a red carpet, but a green carpet. The plan also includes some building development. It will be realized between now and the next 15 to 20 years. In the meantime, the city is divided by a building site that will be even a stronger barrier than the traffic corridor.
The focus lays on ideas and solutions - not for the future - but for the now. We don’t have the time period from now until the future to earn back our long time investments. We have to think different. Using the still existing traffic as potential visitors, clients and spectators is one method to re-set the image. Another strategy is to open up the construction process to the public to change the only negative aspects of it into attraction/ action and spectacle.
